Enhancing a Lesson

Enhancing a Lesson

I have updated my lesson for using videos to show multiplication strategies. The first image is something I would have done last year in the same unit to have my students use technology capture and share their learning on their white boards and the video is what we are working towards this year.

Comparing Two Articles

Posted on February 7, 2022 By Amanda Younger No Comments on Comparing Two Articles

I chose to look at two articles, “Integrating Technology Into The Classroom” and “Seven Myths About Children And Technology” . Something that immediately jumped out at me about both articles was how dated they are. Integrating Technology into the classroom discusses teachers becoming familiar with programs that I learned in elementary school in the first…

Implementing Flip Grid

Posted on January 29, 2022January 29, 2022 By Amanda Younger No Comments on Implementing Flip Grid

I have to say I’m jealous of everyone who can use Flip Grid in your classrooms. My district has decided that it is not FOIPPA compliant due to some data being stored in the United States. I was able to connect with one of our elementary tech leaders and she has suggested using Microsoft Sway…

Technology and Mathematics Questions

Technology has many uses in our classrooms and is one tool among many. Technology while a powerful and valuable tool cannot be the only tool we use. Much of what we do in math relies first on students having a solid concrete understanding of what they are doing, both number sense and operational sense. When…

Balancing Numeracy

Posted on November 20, 2021 By Amanda Younger No Comments on Balancing Numeracy

In my classroom I tend to lean towards problem solving and giving students opportunities for discovery. I have been working on using the strategies championed by Peter Liljedahl in Building Thinking Classrooms in mathematics. For many of our students a balance between direct teaching and discovery is required. Time to work on rich tasks in…

Numeracy Goals

Posted on November 20, 2021 By Amanda Younger No Comments on Numeracy Goals

In looking at my school’s goals and our action plan for learning numeracy is listed along with literacy and character education.  Our numeracy goal reads: “How can we improve students’ computational understanding and mathematical fluency while reducing math anxiety? How can we foster perseverance in students when approaching a challenging math problem?” these are great questions to…

Developing Proficiency

Posted on November 20, 2021 By Amanda Younger No Comments on Developing Proficiency

https://www.nap.edu/read/9822/chapter/12 “Teachers need to muster and deploy a wide range of resources to support the acquisition of mathematical proficiency.” I agree that we need a wide range of skills, mathematic and teaching. This takes time first as a student to acquire the mathematical knowledge, through teacher training and then continued growth through up to date…
