I have chosen to adapt a task from Aboriginal Perspectives at the University of Regina this fabulous resource was shared with me by our Aboriginal Support Worker at my school. The resource has many samples of math problems that support authentic and culturally sensitive first people’s perspectives and the BC math curriculum. It was important to me to find culturally appropriate and authentic activities to make my aboriginal students feel valued. The activity I have chosen Fractions and Decimals with Star Quilts also incorporates a visual arts component which further engages my students. This lesson will likely need to be worked on over a couple of days to allow students time to make their quilts.
In my lesson plan my adaptations and extensions are for my current class and will obviously change for a different class. With this being a group work activity in our randomly selected groups of three most students will be in heterogenous groupings and will be able to work together with stronger students providing leadership and stretching their skills and understanding by teaching their peers and student who need support being able to share their ideas in a lower risk environment
