Mathematical Vocabulary

Mathematical Vocabulary

Mathematical Vocabulary from the United Kingdom. I found the book both informative and extensive. The list of vocabulary in it was helpful and there were very few words I could think of to add. One of the things I would add is to teach students the Greek and Latin roots that give number which appear…

Mathematical Thinking is Essential

Mathematical Thinking is Essential

I strongly identified with the work of Peter Liljedahl as it immediately struck me as the type of learners, I want my students to be, motivated, curious, self-directed thinkers. It also reminded me of the work of the Critical Thinking Consortium whose ideas I was exposed to as an education student at UBC and have…

Math Careers

Math Careers

My two careers in math are in very different fields, one being something I almost went into and was very passionate about as an undergraduate students and the other is based off a hobby. Geographic Information Systems Analyst Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a wonderful overlap of geography, math and just about anything else. In…

My Favourite Math Games

My Favourite Math Games

As adults much of our experience with practicing math facts was in “mad minute drills” timed tests that were useless at best and anxiety inducing at worst. I remember being in grade 4 the grade I currently teach and feeling like an utter failure because I only completed 30 of the 60 problems on my…

Three Act Math Task

This year I have been pushing myself to use rich math tasks and problems that really get my students thinking and working together. One of my favourites is the Three Act Math Task. There are many teachers and math teacher blogs that advocate for the use of Three Act tasks, Dan Meyer and Graham Fletcher…

Math In Images

Math In Images
Above is a picture I took of some of our current math activities in my room. Many of the items are playful in nature from our counters to using Lego to build arrays as well as more traditional manipulatives including Cuisenaire rods and decks of cards. For me math is a game and a puzzle to be solved.  I also chose the chess game below because it is a game of strategy and part of the playfulness of math involves trying different strategies to accomplish a goal. Math is often a game of strategy understanding which strategy to use and when to use it to solve a problem much like playing Chess, Risk, Settlers or Carcassonne.  My goal is to expose students to as many strategies as possible, so that they can choose how they play the game.
