We all know that attitude is everything in life. Our mindset and outlook influence our path forward and success, there is a large body of research on mindset and math attitudes from influential educators including Jo Bolar ( https://www.youcubed.org/). Early in the school year I try to determine where my student’s attitudes towards math lie, is it positive, are they anxious about math? What do they already know?
I’ve also found the video above to influence my own attitude towards math or how I share my attitude towards math. As the speaker in the video demonstrates our students pick up on our own attitudes and the more excited and engaged we are the better our students will respond. By showing our excitement we can help students build a positive attitude towards math and show them that it’s not scary. By bringing in fun playful elements we build anticipation, what will we do next? How will she surprise us now?
