I chose to create my Pinterest board focusing on number sense. Number sense routines are something I do daily with my students and that provide a lot of opportunity for students who may not normally engage in mathematical discussions to engage. My goal when choosing number sense activities is to pick Low Threshold High Ceiling tasks that meet the needs of the students needing the greatest support but also allow those that are ready for extension to reach as high as they can.
The one that I am looking forward to implementing after spring break is Target Numbers. In this activity students are given a target number to reach as well as a combination of factors and addends with the challenge to create the target number using any operation and the numbers provided. This one looks like a good next step to our number of the day routine where students have total freedom in how they create and represent the number of the day. I like that by giving the students specific numbers for creating target numbers we can give structure for those who don’t know where to begin but also challenges those who are ready to begin exploring order of operations.
